Advanced Dynamic Text

You can find the Dynamic Text wizard in the Insert tab on the main Ribbon in the Publication Interface.

Using the Dynamic Text Wizard

When you click on the Dynamic Text icon, a drop-down menu will be available:

Simple Formulation – compose textual content utilizing queries and slices from previously generated content.

Advanced Formulation – compose textual content utilizing multiple formulations from multiple queries.

NOTE: If you click on the top of the icon, it will open the default Simple Formulation pop-up box. You can click on the arrow below to access the Advanced Formulation.

The Dynamic Text Wizard window has five sections:

Metadata Panel (outlined in green): Provide a name and description of the created Dynamic Text. You can also decide to check the box for Auto Title which will automatically grab the name of the query or slice you have selected to input into your formula.

Content Panel (outlined in orange ) for selecting content. When you click on a book, the report and its elements appear in the section below for selection.

New –Access all the queries designed in Data Discovery with a grid representation of the data.

Used –Access any queries and slices that have already been used in the current Publication document template.

Interactive Editor (outlined in black): When you select a specific query or slice from the Content panel, you can make specific selections from the rendered result.

You can right-click on a specific column or row headers as well as specific data cells to access functions in the context of the selected elements. For further explanation for the available functions, please see the Functions Reference Guide.

Formulation Editor (outlined in red): View, insert and modify the equation in this section. When you right-click, you are presented with a multitude of quick function options.

Mathematical Operations (indicated with blue arrow): To insert mathematical operations between the elements that have been selected, click on either standard mathematical functions or logical operators. Right-click in the formulation panel to insert different mathematic operators.

Simple Formulation Dynamic Text Workflow

The steps to use the wizard are as follows:

1. Name and describe the formulation.

2. Create the formulation:

  • Select the query or slice you would like to base the formulation on from the right-side panel.
  • Select the specific piece of content/data you would like to insert and see it appear in the Formulation Editor section.

3. Then, add mathematical operators or functions to the formulation by either right-clicking or using the Mathematic Operators in the section to the right. The operators are there to help you either manipulate the formula with static values or add further calculation options to the formulation. Click here for the Reference Guide INSERT LINK on the right-click functions. You can also choose to format the results of the formulation with the right-click menu

NOTE: Highlighting the current equation in the formula panel will wrap it inside any added formulae chosen through the right-click context menu. This is especially useful for formatting functionality.

4. You can click “Test” to see the result of the formulation.

5. Click “Save” to insert the formulation into the publication.
